Electrical Gremlins And Old Homes

When I bought an old house because I fell in love with the charm, I was completely unprepared for some of the issues that come along with homes of that age. One of the biggest surprises to me was the electrical issues I experienced. Everything from having to unplug everything in the kitchen to use a compressor in the garage to tripped breakers from a single air conditioner left me frustrated and confused. I called an electrician and learned a lot during his inspection. If you are thinking about buying an old house, this blog is for you. I hope that my knowledge and first-hand experience can help you avoid some of the disasters that I faced.

4 Tips for Electrical Improvements & Repairs to Update Your Home with Modern Safety Features

If you want to update the electrical wiring your home, there are a lot of options for improvements that make your home safer. Some of these improvements may include installing modern GCFI outlets and other upgrades that prevent fire and electrical shock hazards. The following tips will help you choose the best improvements and repairs to update your home with wiring that has the modern safety features it needs:

Inspecting Your Wiring for Fire Hazards Due to Previous Repairs and Renovations

One of the things that you will want to do is inspect the wiring for problems like old repairs and splices that were done with old renovations. These issues can be a fire hazard and need to be updated with the correct electrical wiring to ensure your home is safe. In addition, you want to have the wiring checked to make sure there are no short circuits and that the correct gauge wiring is used where it is needed.

Choosing the Right GCFI to Install for Your Homes Electrical Upgrades and Improvements

GCFI outlets are another improvement that you will want to consider when upgrading your electrical wiring. Therefore, you want to make sure that there are GCFI outlets installed in areas that are prone to moisture problems, such as outdoors, kitchens, bathrooms and in some areas of finished basements. These outlets will help protect against electrical shock when there is moisture present.

Ensure That Vulnerable Electrical Wiring Is Protected with the Right Conduits

There are also areas of electrical wiring that are vulnerable to problems with water, such as in basements, crawl spaces and outdoor electrical installations. These are areas where you will want to consider the installation of conduits, which will help keep the moisture away from wiring and prevent the hazards due to moisture.

Installing Extra Breakers & Subpanels

The electrical service for your home may be outdated and undersized, which is why you may want to consider upgrades. Expanding your electrical service is something that you may need to meet the modern electrical needs of your home. In addition, there may be other improvements that you want to have done, such as installing a subpanel or extra breakers.
